However, a few species of blue-green algae, such as Microcystis, Aphanizomenon, and Anabaena, produce toxins capable of causing illness in humans and toxins can cause gastroenteritis, neurological disorders, and possibly cancer. In this case, illness is caused by the ingestion of the toxin produced by the organisms, rather than ingestion of the organism itself, as is the case. The colors of the various tributaries is of course partly result of the geology of the landscapes they drain.

The Circle is an epic story of evil and rescue, betrayal and love, and a terrorist threat unlike anything the human race has ever known. It's also the story of a man named Thomas Hunter - an unlikely hero who finds himself pulled between two worlds. In our reality, he works in a coffee house. In the other, he becomes a battle-scarred general leading a band of followers known as the Circle/5(12). They may be earth’s bacterial heroes, but when these algae are in your aquarium they can be both good and bad.

When this occurs, water will suddenly turn brown with decaying algae, and low dissolved oxygen concentration may lead to fish kills.

The best way to avoid obnoxious levels of blue-green algae is to not over-fertilize your ponds. The word "Havasupai" means people of the blue-green water.
